Le Cirque was the last work painted by Seurat. Even this showpiece from the collection of the Musée d'Orsay will be coming to Otterlo.
Le Cirque depicts an acrobat balancing on a horse that appears to be flying. The Cirque Fernando probably formed the inspiration for the painting. The circus opened in 1875 and was one of the most popular in Paris. It was situated not far from Seurat's studio and was very popular among artists such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Edgar Degas.
